During the Copa America game between Peru and Canada in Kansas City, an assistant referee, Humberto Panjoj, collapsed in stifling temperatures, leading to a stoppage in play. The incident occurred during added time of the first half of the Group A match, highlighting the impact of extreme heat conditions. Canada's goalkeeper, Maxime Crepeau, was quick to signal the referee after Panjoj's collapse, and the assistant referee was subsequently attended to by medical personnel before being replaced for the second half by Ricardo Fabian Baren Cordova from Ecuador.

The episode draws attention to the challenges posed by high temperatures, reaching 91 degrees with a feels-like temperature of 101 degrees and 51% humidity, during the tournament. CONMEBOL has emphasized protocols for managing heat stress in various open-air venues across the U.S., prioritizing player safety and well-being amid extreme conditions.

This incident follows Uruguay defender Ronald Araujo's substitution in a prior match due to heat-related issues, further underlining the importance of proactive measures to safeguard players from dehydration and heat-related health concerns. The circumstances surrounding Panjoj's collapse underscore the necessity for strategic protocols and player care in managing environmental challenges throughout the Copa America tournament, ensuring the health and safety of all participants.
